In our last article we explained what Promo cards in Pokémon TCG Pocket are. For a quick recap, these are event specific cards and can be extremely rare. Some cards are even locked behind these events so once they’re gone, they’re really gone! We talked previously about our favourite cards from Promo A and how rare they are. In this article we’ll talk about our favourite rare Promo B cards!

Mega Pidgeot EX:
This is a Colourless Type Pokémon and is the first of 4 Mega EX Pokémon in this article! It’s also a Stage 2 Pokémon so it might take a little time to Evolve into this Pokémon. But once you do its attack can be very damaging, albeit a little risky. Its attack does 100 damage for 3 Energy but you flip 3 coins alongside this attack. For each heads you discard a random Energy from your opponent’s Active Pokémon. But here’s where the risk comes in; if even one coin turns up tails your attack does nothing! While the risk of you getting 3 tails in a row is low, it’s still a possibility. Luckily with its high HP, Mega Pidgeot EX can withstand a lot of punishment. And since the Energy requirement are Colourless, you can put any type of Energy to this Pokémon! It can be placed in a lot of different decks so it’s a very versatile Pokémon to use!
Mega Latios EX:
This is a Dragon Type Pokémon, which means that the Energy requirements are different to other Pokémon. Its attack does a whopping 160 damage for 3 Energy, but there are a couple of costs to this. Firstly you need 2 Water Energy and 1 Psychic Energy to use this attack. And secondly once this attack is used you discard all energy attached to this Pokémon. However, there are deck setups where this won’t be as much of an issue! If you start with Mantyke (Secluded Springs) you can attach a free Water Energy to Mega Latios EX. You can also use Baxcaliber (Paldean Wonders) to attach more Water Energy if need be. For Psychic Energy, Gardevoir (Genetic Apex) is a good choice to replenish Energy once it’s gone. While it uses a risky play style, Mega Latios EX is a great choice for high damage output!
Mega Medicham EX:
This is a Fighting Type Pokémon and similarly to Mega Latios EX, it also uses multiple Energy types. The main difference is that the extra Energy is optional but extremely useful. It does 100+ damage for 3 Energy which is good enough as is. But if you have Psychic Energy attached to this Pokémon it does an additional 40 damage! However, there’s another effect this attack has which make this Pokémon special. The attack disregards any effects that the opposing Pokémon has attached to it. For example, Oricorio (Celestial Guardians) has an ability that nullifies any attack by an EX Pokémon. With Mega Medicham EX however, it bypasses that ability completely! This can be a huge difference maker in battles against Pokémon with irritating abilities! We wouldn’t recommend solely relying on this Pokémon however, so make sure you have backup plans!
Mega Heracross EX:
Our final Pokémon is a Grass Type Pokémon and the last Mega EX we’ll look at today. This Pokémon has an extremely powerful attack but it takes a while to set up. It does an astonishing 170 damage for 4 Energy! Its health slightly lets it down but a Leaf Cape is an easy fix for this issue. And while it takes a lot of Energy to set up the attack, there are Pokémon that can help. For example, Serperior (Mythical Island) doubles the value of each Grass Energy. Lilligant (Genetic Apex) can also be used to attach Grass Energy to your benched Pokémon! The only potential downside is that when you use this attack you flip a coin. If the coin lands on tails it does 60 recoil damage. This can be incredibly dangerous for a Mega EX Pokémon so be careful with your attacks!
Promo cards are extremely rare since you can’t trade them and once their events are over they’re gone. You can do some rare events where you can get some Promo cards back but these are fleeting. Even if you don’t own these cards yourself, it’s important to be prepared for decks that might use them!
