There are a wide variety of Pokémon Tools in Pokémon TCGP that all have different effects. Unlike Item cards, Tools are attached to your chosen Pokémon and stay attached until that Pokémon is either defeated or the Tool is removed by your opponent. Since there are quite a few options for which Tools to use, here’s a brief list of our favorite Tool cards in the game and which ones you should use for online battles!
Leaf Cape:

If you want a Tool that gives your Pokémon more health you can’t go wrong with the Leaf Cape although it does come with a catch; it only works on Grass type Pokémon. This Tool will give any Grass type Pokémon an additional 30 health which can be a lifesaver for your Pokémon that don’t have that much health to begin with. This can also be used as a combo for health alongside Lilligant (Mega Rising) which gives Pokémon 20 HP and the Starting Plains Stadium card which gives another 20 HP! Use the Leaf Cape if your Pokémon’s health is in a pinch!
Electrical Cord:

This is another Tool that only works with a specific type of Pokémon but it’s extremely useful for building up Energy! This Tool moves up to 2 Electric Energy to 2 Electric Pokémon (giving them 1 Energy each) if the Electric Pokémon the Tool was attached to gets defeated. If you couldn’t tell, this Tool only works with Electric type Pokémon and it does only work if the Pokémon gets knocked out by an Active Pokémon attack but if you want to transfer Energy to multiple Pokémon this is an extremely useful Tool to have in your arsenal! A good Pokémon to attach this to is Zeraora since if it’s played on the first turn it gets an Electric Energy automatically so if it gets defeated you’ll most likely have Energy to transfer. However, if the Pokémon is defeated by a status effect such as Poison or Burn then this won’t count towards the condition and the Energy won’t get transferred so do keep that in mind!
Metal Core Barrier:

Yet another Tool that only works with a certain type of Pokémon, this Tool is an extremely useful protection option but it unfortunately only lasts a single turn. When this Tool is attached to a Metal type Pokémon, that Pokémon will take 50 less damage from any attack. If your Pokémon is in trouble and about to get defeated this Tool is extremely helpful. Taking 50 less damage from most attacks means lasting an extra turn to wait for the right card to turn the tide of the game. However there is an easy counter for this; if the Pokémon is forced out of the Active spot and replaced with one of their Benched Pokémon, this item will be rendered useless since another Pokémon will be in the firing line. But if used correctly, this Tool can be a lifesaver!
Rocky Helmet:

Our last Tool for this article is one that can be used on any type of Pokémon, so no Type worries here! When this Tool is attached to a Pokémon, if that Pokémon takes any damage from your opponent’s Active Pokémon it does 20 damage to that Pokémon. There are many useful functions for this; it can obviously be used as a deterrent to prevent Pokémon with lower health attacking your Pokémon but it can also be used to help with creating Roadblock decks! For example, Druddigon’s default Ability works the exact same way as the Rocky Helmet, so attaching a Rocky Helmet tool to Druddigon means that any attack will also cause 40 recoil damage! It can also be useful for simply dealing a little extra damage to Pokémon, especially if you are going to evolve your Pokémon to do the exact amount of damage needed to defeat your opponent. There are plenty of ways you can use this Tool so it’s always handy to keep in your back pocket!
These are only a few examples of Pokémon Tools that can be used in decks; each Tool has their own useful functions that can be used for certain decks so make sure you explore your options! However we can’t talk about Pokémon Tools without talking about their biggest counter; Guzma. This Supporter card will remove your Pokémon Tools on every Pokémon in your field that has a Tool attached so do keep that in mind when playing Tools!
